Three weekends ago the World Rally Championships took place in my home County, Roscommon. It was the first time the World Rally came to Ireland. The main counties the rally took place in was in counties Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo and Fermanagh. The amount of people that was in my local town that weekend was phenomenal. Who ever thought that there would be traffic jams in Leitrim and Roscommon for over an hour?
I have to say I cant complain though as I have never in all my life seen such a buzz and excitement around the area. Everyone came together and there was a brilliant community spirit. I even heard that people had prepared the community hall so that visitors could sleep there.
From the very beginning when it was announced that it would be in our area to when it was over, people still talk about how great it was.
Unfortunately I was unable to make the first stage of the rally that went directly by my house because of college, but all of my friends and family have filled me in on the chaos that surrounded the event. Both my sister and brother both went camping with their friends the night before on the mountain top, as the roads were closing a five am that morning. Can I add it was approximately five degrees Celsius and all that for a good view? As i said before ultimate chaos.
Here's a video of a crash at the Irish WRC.
